We have been made aware that some removal companies have been publishing incorrect information regarding one way self drive hire, we feel that this information is presented in an unprofessional manor due to the misleading and incorrect facts they have stated.
Please find below the correct details as per Manufacturers specifications, customer reports /averages and information as per ferry companies.
It has been published that the carrying weight of the vehicles does not include the fuel driver and passenger, This information is misleading as you only have to allow for the passenger(s),
A full tank of fuel and the driver is included in the documented unlaiden weight of the vehicles.
The following details are taken directly from FIAT / JC Payne technical Specifications

The Cost Of Self Drive,
It has been published that self drive hire will cost you 000's,
The prices quoted by others are deliberately misleading, as the fuel and toll cost to travel through France has been added to the higher cost of the ferry to travel between the UK and Spain (Cutting out France). therfore giving the impression of higher travel expences.
The true cost of self drive is no more than any reputable removal / Part Load company would charge, and in many cases the cost can work out cheaper.
Fuel and ferry costs do vary over the course of the year, we have chosen Mid September for the cost examples below.

Hire companies collecting full excess amounts for little damage?
On very rare occasions vehicles do get damaged, which we do charge for as any company would,
A complete vehicle damage checklist is completed with each customer before the vehicle is taken and then checked again on the return of the vehicle.
We charge only for any damage caused to the vehicle up to the insurance excess value, for example,
If you leave the excess at the standard £1500.00 liability and you cause £100.00 worth of damage, we will charge you the £100 cost to repair the vehicle.
On the other hand, if you lower the excess down to £250.00 and cause £500 worth of damage we will charge you the excess value of £250.00 only.
We do not take cash deposits from our customers, but we do pre authorise your credit card for the chosen excess amount.
The major ferry companies will NOT charge you for freight if the vehicle is within 6.5 meters long and 3 meters high and you are not carrying commercial goods, this will be confirmed by contacting the ferry companies, some companies allow vehicle lengths up to 7.5 meters.
Loaded to the maximum weights our vehicles normally average 25-30 MPG (Average taken after each hire)
We operate a modern fleet for a period of no more than 4 years after which the vehicle is replaced with new.
All vehicles are fully serviced every 15000 miles,
Between each hire the vehicles are saftey checked which includes checking of fluid levels, torquing of wheel nuts, checking of brakepads and discs, tyres and wheelbearings.
Each vehicle is also valeted between hires.
UK Van's Targeted by Police for overloading?
The Police in ALL countries are interested in the safety of vehicles on the roads including in the UK, this includes possible weight checks,
They do not however target UK vehicles only, It is a common sight to see vehicles from all over Europe being checked,
The French have more of an advantage over the UK and Spain to carry out these checks as they operate mostly toll roads, where, at the toll areas vehicles can be stopped and parked safely to be checked.
In Spain the Police normally set up checkpoints on the motorways late at night or early morning,
They tend to stop and check all vehicles, inspecting mainly documents.
UK Van's Targeted by Thieves?
Vehicle crime continues to be a threat throughout Europe, but is not targeted only to "Marked UK vehicles".
We have not had any repoted theft or bogus Police alerts since J Hire started trading.
Any vehicle is potentially at risk for thieves / Opportunists, this includes car ,vans and lorries, from all European countries, sign written or not.
Is European one way self drive hire legal??
Self drive hire is a perfectly legal alternative to using a removal /part load companies for moving your own goods.
All vehicles are correctly insured for international hire, with full european breakdown cover.
We have been also informed by our customers that some transport companies are telling them that they need special permits and paperwork such as "Tarjeta de Transporte" (Transport Card) to move their own belongings,This no more than a scare tactic to put you off self drive, you DO NOT require any special permit or paperwork to transport your own goods, we do however advise that you make a basic list of what you are carrying in case you are checked.
Why are removal some removal / part load companies charging low rates??
There is no set price for removal company rates, most charge by cubic meter.
Some companies use larger vehicles than others therfore they can carry greater loads, others thrive (unfortunately) on charging you more when they come to collect your goods.
It is also reported that some companies although advertise as legal, are in fact not, your goods may have the correct insurance but it does not mean the van and driver are legally operating.
Van Hire Is Not For Me, But How Do I Know My Removal Company is Legal?
The managing director of J Hire Limited has also been operating International haulage of up to 44 tonnes since 1967, so we feel that we are more than qualified to subit the following information.
All of the information given below is related to UK registered vehicles OVER 3500kgs gross weight, this also INCLUDES vehicles towing trailers with a total vehicle and trailer gross weight over 3500kgs (For Example : LWB Mercedes Sprinter plus a Trailer) This includes so called Spanish companies using UK registered vehicles.
All vehicles over 3500kgs Gross being used for commercial hire and reward (removals included) MUST be fitted with a tachograph, this includes vehicles towing trailers with a combined gross weight over 3500KGS.
All transport companies using vehicles over 3500kgs (including vehicle plus trailer) MUST have a dedicated transport mangager of whom also holds a current INTERNATIONAL cpc (certificate of professional competence)
All transport companies must display in the windscreen of all of their vehicles a valid operators license at all times, To operate in europe this license MUST be GREEN in colour, the Blue operateors licenses are for UK only and are not accepted in Europe. the operators license must show the correct vehicle details, it must also have the name of the company printed on it.
The operators license looks similar to a normal tax disk, however the vehicle still needs to display both the tax disc and the operators licence, Dont be fooled by being told the tax disc is the operators license, it is not.
As well as all of the above, each vehicle must carry a certified copy of a European permit for transport of goods for hire and reward.
All drivers and companies should be able to provide proof of all of the above certificatation, If they are not able to provide any of the above they are not operating legally, and if stopped by the police or customs their vehicle including your goods may be seized and the driver can be held in custordy.
All information can also be varified by checking the VOSA website,
Be careful of companys coming to collect your goods with unmarked vehicles, It is known for drivers/companys whom do not advertise their company on their vehicles to pass off your belongings as thier own if checked, this is to aviod the hire and reward regulations and freight regulations / costs.
So remember, operaters and drivers using vehicles over 3500KGS INCLUDING Vehicles with Trailers grossing combined over 3500KGS Must to be able to provide you the following if they are operating legally.
Tachograph Card, either anolog (Circular) OR Digital Card
Details of the dedictaed transport Manager INCLUDING a copy of their INTERNATIONAL CPC
Operators License (MUST BE GREEN IN COLOUR NOT BLUE) and must correspond with the vehicle.
A CERTIFIED ORIGINAL copy of their European permit for transport of goods for hire and reward.
If you are still unsure of the best option for your removal, the best rescource is the internet, most companies will operate a testimonial page, However we advise checking out internet forums, as they are the best form of reference as you can see the negative as well as the positive reports from customers who have used the many companies on offer.
It is more common to find postings by customers aimed at the companies that are out there that making outlandish and false claims or advertising low prices to gain your trust / custom.

Q: What do I need to book a vehicle?
A:If you are booking the vehicle more than 3 weeks in advance then we only require your name and contact telephone number, we do not require a holding deposit, however all bookings must to be confirmed and paid for, 3 weeks before you travel. Failiure to confirm and pay for your vehicle will result in your booking being cancelled and the vehicle given to another customer.
If you are looking to travel within 3 weeks of booking the vehicle, we will need to take all details relating to the vehicle hire, including drivers names, contact numbers, collection times, and payment details.
Q: How old must the drivers be?
A: You or your driver need to be over 27 years of age and held a full drivers licence for at least 2 years, we are able to lower the age limit to 25, however there is a one off £50.00 charge for this, and as above, must have held a full licence for at least 2 years.
Q: What do I need to bring when I collect the vehicle?
A: On collection of the vehicle we need to see drivers licences and passports for all of the drivers.
Q: Can my pets travel with me?
A: Yes, your pets are more than welcome to travel in the vehicle with you, please make sure to have all of the correct documents required for pet travel,
We do ask that you return the vehicle in a clean condition after transporting your pets, Failiure to do so will incur a £50 valeting charge.
Q: Can I drop the vehicle off at weekends and out of hours?
A: Yes, arrangments can be made for this.
Q: What size do I book the vehicle on the ferry as?
A:No, we do not have tail lifts, tail lifts increase the unlaiden weight of the vehicle, therfore reducing the ammount you can load in to the vehicle.
Q: Do the vehicle have tow bars?
Q: How much fuel will I use?
A: Fuel cost depends on your choice of route, the vehicle type, weight, and driving style, to travel between Northern France and Alicante allow an average costs 300.00€ in fuel, or the Costa Del Sol 400.00€,
Between Alicante and Santander or Bilbao on average is around 150.00€ or from Malaga 230.00€
Fuel in the UK will depend on where you are travelling To or From.
Costs are provided as a guide only.
Q: How much are the toll roads?
A:If you choose to use the toll roads between Northern France and Alicante on average you can spend 200.00€, however toll costs can be avoided if your route is planned carefully.
Travelling between Alicante and Santander or Bilbao you can avoid the toll roads, however we advise paying the toll between Madrid / Zaragoza and Burgos, as to avoid this toll will cost as much in fuel but will add much more time to your journey.
Travelling between Malaga and Santander or Bilbao the toll roads are easily avoided with careful planning.
Costs are provided as a guide only
Q: How many seats are there in the vehicle?
A: 3 seats, Driver plus 2 passengers all with full seat belts.
Q: What is the best Ferry route to take?
A: Our recommendation is generally to use the routes between Portsmouth/Plymouth and Santander/Bilbao. When you compare the cost of using these routes against the additional costs for fuel / road tolls / overnight stops you may need driving through France, it really does start to make sense.
Q: Can I use the Eurotunnel?
A: Yes you can BUT, on the standard train you are only allowed 3 cubic meters of load, this is about the sizein the back of a Land Rover Discovery,
If you have more than 3 cubic meters of load then you will have to go on the freight train, if this is the case it is cheaper to cross the channel using the ferry between Dover and Calais.
